How to Plan a Disney Land and Sea Vacation

Trying to choose between a Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line vacation? You don’t have to. A Disney land and sea vacation combines a stay at Walt Disney World with a sailing on Disney Cruise Line in one trip. As someone who helps families plan these trips, I can tell you it’s often much simpler to put together than you might expect.

Here are some of the most important things to think about when combining Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line.

Should You Visit the Parks or Cruise First?

I recommend visiting the parks before your cruise. For families trying to decide between Walt Disney World and a Disney Cruise Line vacation, combining both offers a balance of energy and relaxation. Starting your trip at the parks means fun but tiring days, with plenty of walking. You’ll appreciate the chance to unwind afterward. Beach days and date nights at sea feel even more relaxing while the kids are at Disney’s Oceaneer Club. After late-night fireworks and early morning rope drops, that time to recharge on a Disney cruise is exactly what most families need.

Starting your trip at Walt Disney World means high-energy park days before transitioning to the more relaxed pace of a Disney cruise.

Getting to Port Canaveral from Walt Disney World

Port Canaveral is approximately an hour from Walt Disney World Resort. While it’s possible to plan a Disney land and sea vacation with Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, sailing from Port Canaveral keeps things much simpler.

There are several ways to get from your Walt Disney World Resort hotel to the ship, including rideshares, shuttles and private transfers. Disney Cruise Line also offers transfer shuttles, which can be added to your reservation. You’ll be met in the lobby of your resort, and your luggage will be transferred directly to your stateroom on the ship.

Vacation Specialist Tip: Families who need child safety seats may prefer Disney Cruise Line transfers or private transportation that includes car seats.

Packing for a Disney Land and Sea Vacation

While many families focus on what to pack, it's just as helpful to know what you can leave at home. Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line both offer helpful amenities for families. Bed bumpers, cribs and life jackets are just a few items available to request during both parts of your trip. You can do a quick load of laundry at the resort or on the ship. Most families will find they need more than a carry-on to travel comfortably.

Packing smart for a Disney Land and Sea vacation helps make travel days and transitions much easier for families.

Vacation Specialist Tip: One helpful approach is to pack one suitcase for Walt Disney World and a second for the cruise. Keep the suitcase zipped until you’re aboard the ship. This helps reduce stress on embarkation day. You can focus on one bag during your resort stay, knowing the second one is already organized for the next part of your vacation. It’s also helpful to have a backpack ready as a day bag while you wait for your luggage to be delivered.

Keeping Track of Your Disney Planning Timeline

When planning a Disney land and sea vacation, you’re not just counting down the days to your trip. There are multiple timelines to keep track of, including dining reservations, onboard experiences and port adventures, online check-in and Lightning Lane selections. Each of these opens at a different time, and it’s easy to miss something important if you’re not keeping track.

This is where working with a travel advisor who specializes in both Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line can make a real difference. At Pure Magic Vacations, we guide families through each step, tracking key dates and reminding you what needs to be done and when. You can focus on enjoying your time together.

A Disney land and sea vacation offers the best of both worlds, combining the energy of the parks with the relaxation of a cruise. With the right planning, it can feel seamless from start to finish. If you’re considering this type of trip, we’d be happy to help you plan each step.
