You’ve just mapped out the perfect Walt Disney World vacation. Then you spot a Disney Cruise Line sailing from Fort Lauderdale that fits your dates exactly. Suddenly, the logistics feel complicated. For families planning a Disney land and sea vacation, taking the Brightline from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale for a Disney Cruise is quickly becoming one of the easiest ways to connect the two. Several of our Pure Magic Vacations agents recently tested it firsthand, which means we can guide you through it confidently.

Getting from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale for a Disney Land and Sea Vacation

For years, most families pairing Walt Disney World Resort with a cruise departure would limit their options to Port Canaveral simply because it felt easier. However, Fort Lauderdale now has its very own Disney Cruise Line terminal, offering additional itineraries. This means more ship options and itineraries that may not be available from Port Canaveral.

For families comparing options, taking the Brightline from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale for a Disney Cruise provides a realistic alternative to driving or flying within Florida.

Brightline also operates northbound, making it equally convenient for families adding Walt Disney World Resort after their cruise.

What it’s Like at the Brightline Terminal in Orlando

Brightline operates from its own terminal at Orlando International Airport (MCO). The Brightline terminal is separate from airline departures, so follow signage specifically for “Brightline.”

Upon entering the terminal, Pure Magic Vacations Vacation Specialist Christl Fourie shares,

“Follow the signs for Brightline up the escalator, then you’ll find the Brightline station on your right-hand side.”

Once inside, the terminal itself is fairly compact. On busy cruise travel days at peak times, seating can fill up quickly.

The Brightline terminal at Orlando International Airport has its own dedicated space separate from airline departures.

Pure Magic Vacations Vacation Specialist Carolyn DeBlieck says,

“The terminal is fairly small. We couldn’t find seats to wait at all. Many were standing along the wall.”

This isn’t necessarily a negative, but families should be prepared for a livelier environment if travelling during peak afternoon departure times.

Food and beverages are available in the terminal, and additional options are offered onboard the train.

Important Luggage Considerations for Train Travel between Orlando and Fort Lauderdale

Brightline allows checked luggage, but storage space is limited and based on availability.

Carolyn shares,

“It says to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to check bags. We were there about 35 minutes in advance, but since so many guests were headed to Fort Lauderdale for a cruise, the checked luggage storage was full.”

Even prepaid luggage doesn’t guarantee space.

Christl explains,

“Prepaying for your checked baggage does not guarantee space. If there isn’t space, Brightline will reimburse you and you can simply carry it on.”

If luggage travels onboard, it’ll pass through security screening. Just like at the airport, prohibited items such as scissors may be confiscated. There is storage space above seats and at the train car entrance, which accommodates typical family luggage and strollers comfortably.

For families planning a Disney land and sea vacation, all of this means:

  • Arrive earlier than the minimum

  • Avoid restricted items in checked bags

  • Keep essentials accessible

Comfort and Seating on the Train

The travel time from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale is approximately three hours, and our team members described the ride as smooth and quiet.

Christl summarizes it well, reporting,

“All in all, it was a quiet, comfortable and swift commuting experience.”

Carolyn appreciates the seating configuration.

“Since we were a group of four, we selected four seats that face each other with a table to work at.”

For families, that table seating is also ideal, creating space for snacks, games and conversation.

Food and beverages are available in the terminal and onboard. Power outlets are also typically available, although one section of the train experienced a temporary glitch during our agents’ trip. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available onboard, which many families appreciate during the three-hour ride.

Brightline onboard menu and snack options during Orlando to Fort Lauderdale train ride

Brightline offers onboard snacks, beverages, and fare upgrades, making the journey from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale comfortable for a Disney land and sea vacation.

Brightline offers several fare options, including Smart and Premium classes. Depending on the fare selected, guests may enjoy lounge access, included luggage or greater booking flexibility.

When planning a Disney land and sea vacation, selecting the right fare depends on timing, luggage needs and how much flexibility your itinerary requires. Our team helps families determine which Brightline fare best aligns with their cruise embarkation timing and overall vacation plans.

Arrival in Fort Lauderdale

The Fort Lauderdale Brightline station is approximately 10 minutes from many of our recommended hotels near Port Everglades, where Disney Cruise Line sailings depart.

Carolyn says,

“Arriving in Fort Lauderdale was very easy, and it was a quick 10-minute ride to the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina.”

She also revealed that rideshare pickup areas can become congested during peak times, so patience will again be required.

For most families, we recommend including an overnight stay in Fort Lauderdale before embarkation at Port Everglades to allow for a more relaxed vacation experience and preferred port arrival times.

Is Brightline a Smart Choice for a Disney Land and Sea Vacation?

For Canadian families flying into Orlando, taking the Brightline from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale for a Disney Cruise removes several complications:

  • There’s no need for an additional domestic flight within Florida

  • No long rental car drive

  • No need to manage one-way vehicle logistics such as tolls and parking

  • Eliminate the stress of driving Florida highways, especially during heavy rain or peak traffic

And when compared to one-way rental car fees, tolls and fuel, Brightline can be a surprisingly cost-efficient option.
