How to Eat Gluten-Free at Walt Disney World

By: Kat Ward

Whether you have a gluten allergy, Celiac Disease, or simply choose not to eat gluten, living a gluten-free lifestyle isn’t going to slow you down at Walt Disney World. In fact, it might become your most favourite place to eat on earth!

Embarking on a magical journey to Walt Disney World is a dream come true for many, but for those with dietary restrictions like gluten intolerance or celiac disease, the excitement might be accompanied by a tinge of uncertainty. The challenges of finding gluten-free options at a place known for its delectable treats might even be daunting.

Fear not, gluten-free travelers, for Walt Disney World’s commitment to creating a magical experience extends to its allergy dining options as well. In this post, we'll explore the hurdles around gluten-free dining, share tips on how to navigate the culinary landscape at Walt Disney World safely, highlight a couple of our favorite gluten-free dining spots, and address the burning question of whether the Disney Dining Plan is suitable for those with Celiac Disease or a gluten allergy.

Is Walt Disney World safe for people with Celiac Disease or a gluten allergy?

Walt Disney World takes dietary restrictions seriously and has implemented measures to accommodate guests who require care to avoid cross contact or cross contamination with gluten. Whether you’re ordering at a Quick Service or Table Service location, always ask to speak to the Allergy Chef or Supervisor if you have any concerns. Some dining locations even have a dedicated preparation area for all allergy orders including dedicated fryers, Mickey waffle irons and more.

Every dining location will be equipped with an allergy binder as a backup resource they can pull out to show you and walk you through your options. Sometimes a menu item that isn’t listed as gluten allergy friendly can be modified as such.

There are no awkward questions here. You’ll find the Walt Disney World dining team well-versed, and actually excited, to make you safe and delicious food!

Please note: You will only ever see food referred to as “allergy-friendly”. As always, eating with a food allergy is up to the individual’s comfort level and discretion.

Dining Reservations and Mobile Ordering: Dine like everyone else!

The key to a worry-free gluten-free dining experience at Walt Disney World lies in planning and communication. First and foremost, it's advisable to make dining reservations in advance, especially at popular table-service restaurants. When making reservations, note your dietary restrictions within the reservation, and upon arrival, remind the server of your needs. Your meal will always come out marked with the infamous (and comforting) allergy pick or on a purple tray (reserved for allergy orders only).

One of the biggest joys of eating gluten-free at Walt Disney World is the convenience of mobile ordering. Certain quick service locations offer allergy-friendly menus right through the app which means you can order your food just like your gluten-eating friends and family.

Pure Magic Vacations Tip: Allergy-friendly orders tend to take a bit longer due to the care and precaution being taken. Where possible, order the allergy-friendly order ahead of everyone else in order to have everything come out close together.

Bonus recommendation: Summer House at Disney Springs has quickly become a staple in the gluten-free community. Most of the menu can be made gluten free and they feature dedicated fryers and prep areas (always confirm on arrival).

Disney Dining Plan for Celiacs: Yes and Yes!

One question that often arises for those with Celiac Disease or living gluten-free is whether the Disney Dining Plan is a viable option.

The Disney Dining Plan returned to Walt Disney World on January 9, 2024 and offers a convenient way to prepay for meals and snacks at various locations across the parks.

The Disney Dining Plan is the ultimate treat for gluten-free travelers. Where else can you enjoy the safe and plentiful bounty that Walt Disney World has to offer? Letting “food worry” go is a major part of the joy in visiting Walt Disney World as someone with Celiac Disease or a gluten allergy. Take it the extra step, prepay for your meals and feel true food freedom.

Pro tip: The gluten allergy-friendly beignets at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter are a snack credit!
